This painting is about the parable of the treasure hidden in a field, as described in Matthew 13:44. “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” The field represents the soul which the man just found out that is in the territory of hell, while the Kingdom of God (the treasure) is hidden deep in his heart.
