Description: Infant's knitted sock, vest and mitten, (mid-15th century?). Baby clothes knitted in soft white wool; the mitten has a contrasting band, probably of naturally black sheep's wool. Several medieval paintings of the Virgin and Child show the Virgin knitting a similar vest-like garment for her son, on three to five needles.

This 15th century leather shoe was found during archaeological excavations in Chequer Street prior to the construction of the Maltings Shopping Centre in 1981. It would have been worn by a 15th century inhabitant of St. Albans.
