The Gardens at Altamont contain an extensive plant collection of around 1,500 different trees and shrubs, many of which are botanically labelled.
Originally known as Rose Hill, the estate came to be called Altamont sometime in the late 18th century through a connection with the Marquis of Sligo, whose eldest son bore the title of Lord Altamont.
Situated on the banks of the River Slaney, Altamont Gardens, an enchanting blend of the formal and informal, are widely respected as a jewel in Ireland's horticultural crown.
The house as it exists today was built on the site of an earlier dwelling dating from at least the 16th century. The house was considerably altered in the mid-18th century and new front and back avenues were laid out.
